Matthias Foss Cowley was born on August 25, 1858, in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. He was a prominent leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), serving as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles from 1897 to 1905. Cowley also served as president of the LDS Church's British Mission from 1894 to 1897 and as a counselor in the presidency of the Salt Lake Temple.
Cowley was a polygamist and was excommunicated from the LDS Church in 1905 for continuing to practice polygamy after the LDS Church had officially discontinued the practice. He was later reinstated as a member of the LDS Church in 1936, shortly before his death on December 16, 1940, in Salt Lake City.
